What to Pack for a Wild Atlantic Way Weekend

Kerry weather is its own thing. We sometimes get four seasons in an afternoon, and on the same morning you can be wading the shoreline in shorts and walking back to the hotel in a fleece. After many years welcoming guests at this corner of the Wild Atlantic Way, here is what we would pack if it were our weekend.

Layers, always

A T-shirt, a long-sleeve, a fleece or warm jumper, and a windproof outer layer will get you through almost anything. Cotton is the enemy here — it traps the damp; merino or synthetic base layers shed it.

Waterproofs

A proper rain jacket, not a poncho. The Atlantic rain is rarely heavy but it is persistent and often comes sideways. We keep a small basket of umbrellas at reception but they are for short dashes from the car, not for coastal walks.

Footwear

One pair of comfortable walking shoes with grip — you will use them on the trails, on the beach and on the wet pavement around the hotel. A second pair (sandals or trainers) for evenings inside. Tip: sand washes off in our boot-room sink; you do not need to leave your shoes outside in the rain.

The little things that make a difference

  • Sunglasses (the light off the bay is bright even on overcast days)
  • A swimsuit (the cove is calmest at low tide and a swim before breakfast genuinely sets you up)
  • A small daypack for water and a flask
  • A book for the lounge in front of the fire — there is always one going

What you do not need to pack

Hairdryer, iron, kettle, toiletries, beach towels and umbrellas for the rain — we have them all. Save the suitcase space for a chunky knit jumper from one of the local craft shops on your way home.
